Atlantic XL has completed a station PLC upgrade for Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC), replacing an obsolete control system at its Rankin Inlet facility with a modern, fully supported platform.
Qulliq Energy Corporation is the government-owned power utility for the territory of Nunavut, Canada. The corporation generates, transmits, and distributes electricity across remote and isolated Arctic communities.
The existing station PLC at the QEC plant had reached obsolescence, creating operational and support challenges. Consequently, QEC required a reliable, modern control system capable of supporting continued operations in a remote and logistically unique location.
In response, Atlantic XL designed, fabricated, programmed, installed, and commissioned a new station PLC using the latest ControlLogix platform from Rockwell Automation. The project involved full system integration and commissioning to ensure a smooth transition from the legacy system with minimal disruption to operations.
According to Atlantic XL, delivering the project required careful coordination due to the Arctic location and the requirement for the plant to remain operational during installation and commissioning, with shipping logistics and travel presenting additional challenges. Despite these constraints, the Atlantic XL team successfully executed the installation and commissioning on site.
“Working in remote locations like Rankin Inlet requires detailed planning and flexibility,” says project lead, Corey White. “Our team ensured the new ControlLogix system was delivered, installed, and commissioned efficiently, giving QEC a modern platform they can rely on for years to come.”
Commenting on the project, QEC President & CEO, Ernest Douglas enthuses: “Upgrading critical control systems is essential to maintaining safe and reliable power generation across our communities. This project was completed with careful coordination to ensure continuity of service while modernizing key infrastructure. The new system strengthens operational reliability and positions the facility to meet ongoing demands in a unique Arctic environment.”
